March Snapshots

In between big activities and chicks (apparently this was the month to make up for all the months I tried to eliminate all optional activties from the schedule), we also spent time around the house--lots of playing, schooling, gardening, and little friends coming and going. Here are way too many pictures from the month in chronological order.

Encapsulating our current focuses: Josiah ran up to me the other night and said, "I am General George Washington and I have a message for you about the space shuttle." Also, one of the times we went to the library, Elijah chose to return three Revolutionary War books and checked out one castle, one space, and one more Revolutionary War book.

Playdough, counting bears, and horses: a frequent play combination

Making 'A' is for Apple prints

Elijah's print; he's really liking our phonics lessons

Elijah's boats, I think

Making a fort; the repurposed tomato cages in the background are flags
Josiah loading up his boats; the counting bears fit just perfectly,
so that you can fill up one window block and then place another
window block layer on top
Elijah's Lincoln Log set up
Addition work at preschool
Josiah's favorite work tray at preschool is playdough

Elijah spends every room time (and lots of other times!)
playing with legos
Dustin took them to see the USS Iowa while I was
away on Women's retreat
J's "A" is for Astronaut page
J's battleship
Coloring a space shuttle picture, a frequent activity
this month; J is a really good, careful colorer
Elijah also did his share of space shuttle pictures
The boys and I did lots of gardening around the yard, while Dustin worked hard on putting garden beds into the back corner.

Magnet castle--another current interest, encouraged by his Lego castle;
you can see J's dot painting in the background
The boys, and my students, are enjoying each stage of the corner renovation project (not sure that Dustin's enjoying their high interest in that corner). The fourth graders built a dam for a history project.

All toys can construct war items:

Tinker Toy cannons and bears ready to fight
We planted seedlings, some of which have sprouted.

More coloring!
Josiah is, sadly, occasionally dropping his nap and instead having
reading time (it's a cozy set up!)
Pattern blocks at preschool

Bird seed sensory bin at preschool
Drawing with chalk at preschool

More reading time
Josiah recently started kicking the soccer ball around
the yard

Santa Ana Zoo

We also went to the zoo in March, thanks to a great coupon from my mom.

The turtles were a hit!
There are monkeys, monkeys, monkeys at Santa Ana Zoo

Josiah enjoyed acting out how a chick hatches over and over

USS Endeavor

My grandparents came out to visit in March before they headed back to Indiana after wintering in Arizona. We enjoyed visiting with them. One day, we took a day trip to the Science Center in LA, getting to go the opposite way on the train line!

Waiting for the train where we met up with my family
Train riding!
Two more train lines later, we walked to the science center. The big attraction was getting to see the space shuttle Endeavour.

It's quite the museum! The boys liked watching the fish at the aquarium. They also especially liked the space section, which has one of the Gemini spacecraft and one of the Mercury capsules.
And then more trains back home! The boys have enjoyed watching on-line videos of space shuttle launches and of the Endeavour making its way through the streets of LA. Lots of space shuttle coloring has also been happening.
