At the beginning of March, we headed down to San Juan Mission with all my fourth graders (Josiah calls them "my fourth graders," which is something I think is great for all 2 year olds to have) and their families (20 kids + 7 moms!). While we've only done a mini-unit on California instead of year of California history, it was fun to do the classic fourth grade mission field trip.
We were able to take advantage of the school group rate and take the train down together. Elijah loved getting to sit around a table with the 4th grade girls on the way down.
When we got to the mission, we divided into older and younger kids and then toured beautiful mission. Gorgeous weather, beautiful place!

We were too early in the month for swallows, but you can see old nests along the roofline |

Gorgeous day! |
We enjoyed a picnic lunch together and the kids all ran around the playground while the moms sat and chatted.
Since only a few trains run between San Juan and Fullerton, we still a couple of hours before our train, so we walked down to a little petting zoo.
It had a big pen of guinea pigs that you could hold and feed. The perimeter was lined with benches and the poor loved-on guinea pigs all hid under them.

Elijah even managed to catch one himself |
The highlight was the huge corn box; the boys still had some food left to feed the animals, but wanted to play in the box as long as possible instead. A little crowded with all the friends, but lots of fun!

Elijah reported: corn is better than sand because it doesn't stick to you |
A tired and happy group returned home at the end of the day.
